Bailey Bear Happenings -April 30th Edition

Week of April 26-30, 2021

Principal Update

We’ve made it to May and we’re on the way to finish the year strong. Once again I want to remind everyone that Bailey is welcoming back to campus any students who want to be here for in-person learning. After Spring Break families began sending students back to Bailey. In March we were averaging about 150 students per day on campus. During April that average has steadily been increasing and this past week we’ve welcomed just over 250 students per day.

Keep in mind that 250 students is only about 27% of our regular enrollment. That means an average classroom this week typically had about 5 – 7 students per class. Social distancing at 6ft is still possible in most classes. Also, we are relieved that we have not recorded any cases of on-campus transmission of Covid-19 all year. So far no one has come to campus and spread the virus to anyone else. We have been following all safety guidelines and anyone who tested positive (outside of school) was quarantined to home immediately. Consequently we have had to send only a few people home all year who were exposed to someone who tested positive, and none of those people ever came back positive during quarantine. We have been very safe here at Bailey, which makes it much easier to invite students back to campus for in-person learning.

Summer Enrichment Learning Opportunity

AISD is offering Summer Enrichment Learning opportunities at all of its middle school campuses. This is not your regular “summer school” experience. Summer Enrichment Learning is designed to help support students in new and innovative ways. We will be offering support for all grade levels in ELA and Math, and we will include a fun and different kind of elective class as well. Any student wishing to strengthen their skills before moving on to the next grade level is welcome to join us for the 2 ½ week, half-day Summer Session (June 14 – 30th). There will be more details coming soon in a flyer to all families. Note: This is not the “Required” Summer School for 8th graders who are failing and in need of credit recovery. Information for that program can be found on the AISD Website.

STAAR Testing In May

May is STAAR Testing month. We are encouraging any student who wants to take their STAAR tests to be back on campus on the designated testing days. We are using this year’s STAAR tests to gather baseline growth data for as many students as possible. Because of complications of the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects on overall attendance numbers across the state, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is not counting this year’s tests for accountability purposes, which means they are not required* for students this year. However, AISD is encouraging all students to take the test(s) in-person if they are able. All safety protocols will be maintained throughout the school as well as in any testing environments. Remote learners who come in-person for the test will be allowed to return home as soon as they are done with the test, if they wish. (Parent pick-up is required – no early buses will be running.) Those students are also welcome to stay all day if they wish. They will simply join their in-person classes after testing is over. Remote learners who are not testing on campus will still have regularly scheduled ZOOM/BLEND classes on each day of testing (Remember - No STAAR Tests can be given remotely).

STAAR Testing Dates

May 6th - Science (8th grade ONLY)

May 7th - Social Studies (8th grade ONLY)

May 11th - Math (ALL grade levels)

May 12th - Reading (ALL grade levels)

*May 18th - Algebra I EOC (End of Course) - Required of all Algebra I students for HS graduation

  • We highly recommend this EOC Exam be completed this year while Algebra concepts are fresh
