Bailey Bear Happenings - April 14th Edition

April 14th Edition

Principal Update

Bailey Parents & Guardians,

The STAAR testing season begins next week. Please see the related notes about testing in this newsletter. There is one thing I wanted to remind you about regarding testing this year. As you may be aware, last year we had to implement House Bill 4545 from the Texas legislature. It was a measure passed during the last legislative session to provide additional tutoring support for those students who either failed or did not take the STAAR last Spring. The intent was to support those students who may have experienced learning losses during the pandemic. We are required by the HB4545 law to provide those students with 30 hours of tutoring in each Reading (and/or) Math. Many of those students have been receiving their tutoring daily during our advisory period.

Please remind your students that HB4545 will be in effect for this coming school year as well. The tutoring requirement will continue to apply for all students who either Do Not Pass or who do not take the STAAR tests this spring. Please encourage your student to do their very best on each day of testing. Hopefully, many of them can avoid the HB4545 requirements for next year.

John Rocha, Principal

STAAR Testing Information - Please READ!

Dear Bailey Parents and Guardians,

We are beginning our 2023 STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) administrations testing window. 6th-8th graders are required to take the test. Below is the schedule for our official testing dates.

ADD dates:

Reading 6th-8th Grade April 19th/ Make up April 20th

Science 8th Grade April 25 & Social Studies April 26th Make up April 27th and April 28th

Math 6th-8th & EOC Algebra May 4th / Make Up May 5th

  • Please make sure your student gets plenty of rest the night before each test, and a good breakfast the morning of the test.

  • Please make sure that your student is on time to school with a fully charged Chromebook and charger.

  • Please remind them that they may not have their phone or smart devices(watches, ear buds, etc.) in the classroom during testing

 • Please try not to schedule doctor’s appointments around these dates so students can be in attendance.

 • Please remember that on these testing dates students are required to be monitored at all times until they finish the assessment. This being the case, we ask that you remember that campus will be closed to all parents and visitors to ensure proper monitoring of students.

 • Since we will have students testing in all parts of the building, we will be a secure testing site. Please help us stress to our students that we need them to do their best on each test.

7th and 8th Grade Student Opt-Out of High School Credit Information

Dear Bailey Bear Families,

If your student is enrolled in a high school credit course, there is some important information and deadlines you should know about.

Teacher tutoring and academic support are available for all students. Contact your child’s teacher directly to learn more about their tutoring times and Twilight. Please be aware, the final grade your student earns at the end of the semester will appear on their high school transcript and could affect class rank.

If the student is failing, there is an option to Opt-Out and “drop” the high school level course by the deadline indicated below. The course status will change to a middle school-level course. The grade in that course will not affect your student's high school transcript, GPA, or class rank if the change is completed by the deadline.

  • The deadline to withdraw from a high school credit course with a state EOC exam (such as Algebra I) was January 27, 2023. Algebra I can no longer be dropped.

  • The deadline to withdraw from any other high school credit course is April 21, 2023 (i.e. Spanish, IPC, Principles of Hospitality, Introduction to Event Planning, Principles of Applied Engineering, Principles of Arts Audio/Visual, Principles of Construction, Robotics, PLTW - Gateway, Health, Touch Data (Keyboarding), and Lifetime Nutrition & Wellness).

Education First Exchange Year:

Our students come from thirteen different countries around the world including three Asian countries and countries all over Western Europe. By hosting, families are inviting cultural enrichment into their homes, schools, and communities. Families of all shapes and sizes benefit from the experience. We have 3,000 families all over the nation including single parents, empty nesters, families with young children, LGBTQIA+ households, and everything in between. Not only does it expose the family members to another culture, it can also foster lifelong bonds that reach all over the globe. Host family is responsible for three meals a day, a place to sleep (can share a bedroom w/a sibling of same gender & similar age) and some transportation to activities. Students are 15-18 yrs old, will have their own health insurance and spending money.

Check out this short video of just a few students experience: One Year That Will Change Your Life

Please let me know if you are interested in learning more about hosting or visit our website at efexchangeyear.org. You can also contact me directly for any interest, questions, at giulia.zanini@ef.com or (617) 619-1020.
Lastly, we also offer a referral program. If you know anyone in your community that would be interested and does end up hosting, we offer a $200 referral bonus.

Bowie Performance Camps

Performance Course visited with Bowie feeder Middle School Athletics earlier this week about an upcoming opportunity for athletic development that will be taking place this summer! This program was developed by Performance Course to offer athletes the opportunity to develop both physically and mentally.

PC takes a goal-oriented approach to develop speed, agility, mobility, functional strength and power. Performance nutrition, character development, mental preparation and goal setting techniques are also included in the curriculum to develop the whole athlete!

The session starts June 5th, and will run Monday-Thursday from 8am to 1pm, depending on which session your son or daughter signs up for.

We want to ensure all athletes have the opportunity to participate. To receive more information from Performance Course, please fill out this link:

https://info.performancecourse.com and select “Summer” and “Bowie”. This will ensure you receive information about the summer but does not enroll your child!
